Trang An, Ninh Binh Province
Roughly a two hour drive from Hanoi, Ninh Binh province is home to the village of Tam Coc. Forgetting my "no tours" pledge, I did this because last year the weather was very overcast, cloudy and had a steady drizzle. It was beautiful, but I wanted some sun for better pictures.
After about an hour mountain bike ride around the area and lunch (which was delicious), I got on a small boat for the tour around the river and caves. There are three cave tours available. We were booked on the medium length tour which included three caves, the longest of which is 1000 meters under the rock. In some parts, I had to bend in half in the boat to keep from bashing my head.
Simply incredible scenery. It's called "The Terrestrial Ha Long Bay" for a reason. Certainly worth a day out of your time in Viet Nam.
